Personal check, dated August 14, 1971, signed by Hall of Fame outfielder Roberto Clemente. The check, drawn on the Mellon National Bank and Trust Company of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is made out to "Bell Telephone Co." in the amount of $196.40 and is signed "Roberto Clemente" in blue ink (grading "8") along the base. A stamped endorsement appears on the reverse. Roberto Clemente died on December 31, 1972, when the plane he was on, which was carrying relief supplies to Nicaraguan earthquake refugees, crashed over the Atlantic ocean. The Baseball Hall of Fame immediately waived its normal five-year waiting period for Clemente, and he was inducted the following summer. As a result of his untimely death, Clemente's signature is scarce today and checks have always been highly prized by collectors. This is just the fifth Clemente check we have ever offered and the only one dating from 1971. The check (6 x2.75 inches), which has normal bank cancellation stamps displays a vertical fold and is otherwise in Near Mint condition. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
