New Phyrexia, the third set in the Scars block (released May 13, 2011) brings the story of the war in Mirrodin to an end with the defeat of the Mirrans and the plane coming into the control of the Phyrexians. This defeat is reflected in a reversal of the ratio of Phyrexian to Mirran cards that was present in the first set. Also, mechanics such as Proliferate and Infect are freed from their usual color restrictions showing that Phyrexian influence is everywhere now. The basic land cards in the set also had artwork to showcase the takeover by the Phyrexians.
The inclusion of Phyrexian mana made this one of the most interesting sets to date in draft formats and Standard play. All colors suddenly had access to Counter Spell (Mental Misstep) and draw power (Tezzeret's Gambit). This lead to some of the most creative and innovative decks seen.
Keep an eye out for some truly exceptional cards like Karn the Liberated, Act of Aggression, Beast Within, Sword of War and Peace, Batterskull, and Surgical Extraction just to name a few.
There are 175 black-bordered cards in the third set of the Scars of Mirrodin Block.
