Montana Buying Recap – Ruth, Mantle, and Mays anyone?!

Members of the Dave & Adam’s buying team recently returned from a trip to lovely Montana to secure a handful of key vintage baseball cards from the likes of Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, and Willie Mays! These are three of the biggest stars and larger than life icons of America’s pastime! Let’s take a look at some of the cards the buyers came back with!

The above is a 1952 Topps Baseball card #311 Mickey Mantle, his second season card! The buyers also acquired a 1951 Bowman Baseball #253 rookie! This is the only recognized rookie card of ‘The Mick’. Mickey Mantle is, quite simply, the most widely collected figure in the hobby. He was the hero to entire generations during the 1950s and 1960s. While the 1952 Topps card above receives a tremendous amount of fanfare, collectors often overlook or forget that this is his only true rookie. This incredibly important card is subject to numerous condition issues as the years have passed by like print lines, wax stains along the reverse and poor centering.

Moving on to another Yankee legend here are a couple of 1933 Goudey Baseball Babe Ruth cards – card numbers 149 and 181 to be exact! ‘The Sultan of Swat’ actually has two other cards in the set as well – cards #53 (commonly referred to as the ‘Yellow Ruth’) and #144 (commonly referred to as the ‘Full Body Ruth’). Card #149 is also known as the ‘Red Ruth’ and card #181 is referred to the ‘Green Ruth’. So many colors! While these four cards are not Babe Ruth’s most valuable or rarest, they are considered his most important and they capture the ‘The Great Bambino’ near the twilight of his career.

One of the final cards we will feature is again from the 1951 Bowman Baseball set. This time it’s Willie Mays rookie card #305! This is the only recognized rookie card featuring ‘The Say Hey Kid’, one of the greatest all-around players the diamond has ever seen. This card, along with the Mantle rookie detailed earlier, is one of the two major keys to the 1951 Bowman set and is arguably the tougher rookie to find especially in a high-grade condition.
