DACW Buying Team: Graded card purchase

The Dave & Adam’s Buying Team just picked up a handful of graded cards from a seller in Massachusetts that would certainly stand out in any collection. Six of the cards in the buy are rookies of some of the biggest names in sports from the second half of the 20th century, and the other one is “special” in its own way. All of the cards have received high grades for their condition, including a pair of Gem Mint 10s.

The sports rookies in the buy included:

1957 Topps Football #138 Johnny Unitas Rookie PSA 6 (EX-MT)
1981 Topps Football #216 Joe Montana Rookie PSA 9 (MINT)
1985/86 O-Pee-Chee Hockey #9 Mario Lemieux Rookie PSA 9 (MINT)
1979/80 O-Pee-Chee Hockey #18 Wayne Gretzky Rookie PSA 8 (NM-MT)

The final card in the purchase is one of the more infamous non-sport cards ever produced. It is from the 1977 Topps Star Wars set, and it features C-3PO with an extra “appendage”. Anyone familiar with the Star Wars cards from the 1970s is aware of this “boner” made by Topps and how a corrected version of it was produced. It received a Mint-9 grade from PSA.
