He was drafted by the Buffalo Sabres in the third round, 74th overall, in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. He was called up by the Sabres and made his National Hockey League debut on December 19, 2006, in a game against the Montreal Canadiens. MacArthur earned his first NHL point in his fourth game, on February 20, 2007, when he tallied an assist on a goal by Andrew Peters. MacArthur scored his first NHL goal against the Ottawa Senators on February 22, 2007.
